The Alps was very difficult to access until relatively recently given the terrain of the area, and as such the area has always been sparsely populated. Celts, Romans, Germans and others clans were populating these lands although the climate was never conducive towards a growing population in The Alps. Currently, the history of the Alps tells a story of the beginnings and growth of some of the best ski resorts in the world.

Currently, the Alps is an ideal holiday destination for skiing, with skiing faciltiies for all levels, plenty of quality hotels and apartments, and good travel and transport connections that have made the area a global benchmark for ski resorts across the world. Chamonix, Alpe D'Huez, Sestriere, Cervinia and Zermatt are known worldwide for the quality of their pistes and its tourist infrastructure, as well as views of the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc or Monte Rosa.

The first settlements which were recorded in the Alps date back to at least 3000 years before Christ, but the first references are not credible until Roman times. The Alps have always been split between different countries, with many different languages and customs found across this mountainous region. In the twentieth century skiing experienced a rapid rise in popularity as a sport fashion that has proliferated throughout the range, and has led to the creation of numerous exclusive ski resorts.
